You could be paddling on the Legacy Loop like a pro and if you’re up to the challenge, the Olympic course. Whether you’re a beginner, novice, intermediate or advanced there’s a course to suit you.

Our Paddlesport Development Programme comprises of seven different courses. Starting with the basics on our lake, you’ll move through the stages and advance your skills so you can tackle paddling in white water.

We offer this programme in two formats. You can choose to take the course over six, one hour weekly sessions that start periodically throughout the year or as an intensive weekend course which follows the same syllabus as the six week programme but covered over two days.

Introduction to Flat Water Kayaking - Lake

Course Overview

This course is for anyone who would like an enjoyable introduction to the sport of kayaking. We will provide you with the necessary information, knowledge and techniques for you to able to kayak safely on the Lake on your own, or be part of a led group in sheltered water environments.

Experience Required

  • Limited or no previous kayaking experience
  • Aged 16+
  • You have a reasonable level of general fitness (will allow for greater progression and enjoyment)
  • Confident being in water (there is no requirement to be able to swim, although it is recommended)

Developing Flat Water Kayaking - Lake

Course Overview

This course is for those who are looking to progress their flat water kayaking ability. Learn a range of techniques and tactics that will allow you to skillfully and stylishly control your kayak on the Lake preparing you for the transition to moving water.

Experience Required

  • You have the appropriate ability from the Introduction to Flat Water Kayaking Course
  • Aged 16+
  • Have sufficient flat water kayaking experience:
    • Know how to choose and set up a kayak appropriately
    • Paddle forwards in control
    • Turning and stable use of edge
    • Can move sideways
    • Can steer the kayak and maintain control
    • Can stop and reverse the kayak

If you have little or no kayaking experience then the Introduction to Flat Water Kayaking Course may be more suitable for you

Introduction to White Water Kayaking - Legacy

Course Overview

This course is for anyone who would like to transfer their flat water kayaking skills onto the exciting moving and moderate white water environment (Class 2/3 white water). We'll be taking all the flat water skills you have previously learnt and applying them on moving water, building up to running white water with confidence and control.

Experience Required

  • Aged 16+
  • You have the appropriate ability from the Developing Flat Water Kayaking Course or have sufficient flat water kayaking experience:
    • Paddle forwards in control
    • Turning and stable use of edge
    • Transfer and maintain and edge
    • Can move sideways on the move
    • Good understanding and application of how to trim on flat water
    • Can steer the kayak and maintain control using an active blade
    • Can perform a peer deep water kayak rescue
  • If you have your British Canoeing 2 Star Award and are working towards the 3 Star Award 

If you do not have good control on flat water then the Developing Flat Water Kayaking Course may be more suitable for you.

Developing White Water Kayaking - Legacy

Course Overview

This course is for anyone who would like to progress their white water kayaking skills and become a more competent paddler in the moderate white water environment (Class 2/3 white water). We'll look at making your paddling more effective, efficient, and enjoyable.

Experience Required

  • Aged 16+
  • You have the appropriate ability from the Introduction to White Water Kayaking Course or have significant experience paddling on Class 2 white water, with some experience paddling Class 3 white water
  • Having a reliable white water roll will maximise your learning and enjoyment but is not essential

If you have limited white water kayaking experience then the Introduction to White Water Kayaking Course may be more suitable for you.

Dynamic White Water Kayaking - Legacy

Course Overview

This course is for anyone who would like to improve their paddling style becoming a truly competent paddler in the moderate white water environment (Class 2/3 white water). We'll look at your technique for running and using features to aid position on the river.

Experience Required

  • You have the appropriate ability from the Developing White Water Kayaking Course;
  • Passed the Legacy Course Assessment
  • Aged 16+
  • Have significant experience paddling on Class 2 and Class 3 white water
  • Having a reliable white water roll will maximise your learning and enjoyment

 

If you have limited white water kayaking experience in the Class 3 environment or do not have a reliable white water roll then the Developing White Water Kayaking Course may be more suitable for you.
