Paddlesport Development Programme

Suitable for all levels, see relevant courses.

Whether you want a fun and supportive introduction to kayaking, progress how you are currently paddling white water, or your first experience on the Olympic Course, we have you covered!

Our Paddlesport Development Programme is comprised of 8 different courses designed to take you from a complete beginner, all the way to styling your lines on the Olympic Course. In addition, we also offer an Introduction to Freestyle Kayaking Course for those looking to get the most out of our white water courses.

We offer this programme in two formats. You can choose to take the course over four, 1.5 hour weekly sessions* that start periodically throughout the year or as an intensive weekend course which follows the same topics as the four week programme but covered over two days.

*Junior and Olympic level courses are for one hour over four weeks

What's included?

  • Coaching; Friendly, professional, and approachable coaches, that are up to date with the most modern and effective paddling and coaching techniques in white water kayaking. All coaches will provide you with honest and individual feedback to get you paddling in the most stylish, efficient, and enjoyable way.
  • All equipment: A kayak, spray deck, paddle, wetsuit, wetsuit boots, helmet, and buoyancy aid
  • Lee Valley White Water Centre membership

  • Personal third party liability insurance
  • Food and beverages

Please note: If you do not meet the minimum experience required for the course you wish to attend, the coach reserves the right to refuse your participation. In which case we will do our best to move you to a more appropriate course if possible. If there is no suitable course available, we will transfer you to a course at a later date. If you are unsure of the appropriate course for you then please see the Experience Required section for each course. If you are still unsure then contact the centre to discuss the best option for you.

Introduction to Flat Water Kayaking 

This course provides you with an enjoyable introduction to the sport of kayaking. You will learn everything you need to get you well on your way in your new sport – from choosing a kayak and setting it up, controlling the kayak on the water, and rescuing yourself in the event of capsize.

Developing Flat Water Kayaking 

Our Developing Flat Water Kayaking course aims to give you all the skills to become more independent in this environment. Following on from the Introduction to Flat Water Kayaking Course, you will learn to paddle with greater ease, control and style, giving you the very best preparation for the exciting and demanding white water of the Legacy Course

  • General session: Aged 16+
  • Junior session: Aged 8 - 16 Parental Consent Form required
  • Attended the Introduction to Flat Water Kayaking Course at Lee Valley White Water Centre or similar course at a different centre
  • Know how to use a spray deck and self-rescue
  • Be able to choose your own equipment and set up a kayak
  • Basic control of the kayak on flat water including paddling forwards and backwards, stopping and sideways
  • A reasonable level of general fitness (will allow for greater progression and enjoyment)
  • Confident being in water (there is no requirement to be able to swim, although it is recommended)

If you have little or no kayaking experience then the Introduction to Flat Water Kayaking Course may be more suitable for you

Introduction to White Water Kayaking 

White Water - That is what this course is all about!

Our Introduction to White Water Kayaking course aims to transfer everything you have learnt so far into the exciting and demanding white water environment of the Legacy Course. You will look at how to enter and exit the flow, paddle downriver, and learn how to be safe in and on the white water. You will develop your ability to read and understand the environment, setting you up for a bright future as a white water kayaker.

  • Competent paddling a kayak on the flat water including paddling forwards, carving and turning the kayak on an edge, and have an understanding of how trim effects performance
  • A reasonable level of general fitness (will allow for greater progression and enjoyment)
  • Confident being in water and be able to swim

If you do not have good control on flat water then the Developing Flat Water Kayaking Course may be more suitable for you.

Developing White Water Kayaking 

Following on from our Introduction to White Water Kayaking Course, we will help you to progress your understanding and ability to read the white water, build your confidence and develop your decision-making and line choice to get you paddling the Legacy Course purposely, all whilst having lots of fun!

  • Attended the Introduction to White Water Kayaking Course at Lee Valley White Water Centre or similar course at a different centre
  • Know how to use a spray deck and swim safely in white water.
  • Be competently paddling on the flat water, including paddling forwards, carving and turning the kayak on an edge.
  • Breaking in and out of moving / white water, paddling down river, and understand the effect trim has on the performance of the kayak
  • A reasonable level of general fitness (will allow for greater progression and enjoyment)
  • Confident being in water and be able to swim

If you have limited white water kayaking experience then the Introduction to White Water Kayaking Course may be more suitable for you.

Dynamic White Water Kayaking

If you are looking at becoming a truly competent white water paddler on the Legacy Course, then this is the course for you. Our Dynamic White Water Kayaking Course looks at really maximising your use of the white water. Styling your lines, using features to change position and direction, and crossing features.

Dynamic Advanced White Water Kayaking 

The Dynamic Advanced White Water Kayaking Course looks at driving through, over and round features, using them to change your direction and position on the river to make all your moves as efficient and stylish as possible. We will be using waves, stoppers, and holes to surf, side surf, boof over and through, as well as using blocks to flair off.

If you want to get on your way to becoming a truly competent and stylish paddler on the Olympic Course, this is for you!
